Orion was currently very thankful he was educated. He was also thankful he left most of his keepsakes shipped to his family on earth. And he was very thankful he had the foresight to have his eyes fixed with surgery before this... crash of a mission. As Laros spelled the word himself, Orion nodded, considering what to use next. Then he brightened, waiting for Laros to look at him before tugging on his own shirt a few times before above "water" he wrote "shirt".

"Crend," Laros wrote, matching the letters in the alphabet as well. THe man seemed a little too enthused for this, and the boy with him was equally so.
"Draen funtc yna faent, Byby," the boy said, giggling, and stuck his tongue out at Orion.

Orion considered what to use next. So far they were able to use things easily displayed... Oh. Duh. He quickly drew a rudimentary drawing of a person into the ground. He then circled a foot, a leg, the body, an arm, a hand, and the head, labeling each with an arrow from the name to the part of the body.

Laros followed along, writing out "Vuud, mak, puto, yns, ryht, rayt," respectively, following along with the things Orion had circled. With so much discerned, he followed along to memorize the changed parts of their language, and where the alphabet was switched out. So far, he simply seemed intent on figuring out the rest of this language.

Orion nodded as he and Laros worked on constructing a two way alphabet. So far it seemed that vowels and consonants were still used the same, just different letters in those places. Still, he had run out of easy words and while they had filled over half of the alphabet, there was still a wide amount missing. He waited for Laros to look at him before gesturing at the rest of the letters and writing "Etayc?", hoping Laros would have a few examples to help continue filling in the blanks.

Laros nodded, then picked up a handful of sand. He allowed it to fall in a pile, under which he wrote, "Cyht." He took the gourd, then, and set it on the ground as well, writing "kuint" beneath it. He ordered his boy to bring in a cup and his axe, both of which would be set down beside him. Under those, he wrote "lib," and "yqa." Laros looked satisfied, and added the new letters to the alphabet as well.

Orion watched as Laros came up with his own words and objects, blinking in surprise at what the man called what he assumed was an axe. Still, Orion added his own words to match Laros's. Now they had enough to hold a conversation. Kind of. Moving a bit to the side for more room, staying knelt to the ground, Orion began writing three sentences into the ground, in his alphabet first, then Laros's.
"My name is Orion.
Astraeus is for exploration.
Where am I?"

Laros took his time reading what was written, first trying to do so in Orion's language. Before long, however, he waved his hand and erased the writing, and letters would be drawn in without his movement.
"Your name, and Astraeus, are unusual and foreign.
You are in the Free Tribes land.
Do you hail from Empire, or Resistance?"

Orion watched as Laros manipulated the earth to form his replies. Not too surprising; someone had to manipulate the earth to allow him out of his cell, and the only one there besides the boy was Laros. Inwardly Orion held back a curse. He recognized none of those names; long experience with history, both real anand fantastical, told him that he was in the middle of a fight he had no part. Unwilling to show his gifts just yet, Orion studied the words for a moment before writing his reply into the loose dirt with a finger.
"Astraeus is for exploration; we explored farther than expected. I know none of those names. What is the name of this place, this village? Town?"

Laros frowned, evidently displeased with the answer provided. Still, he made no aggressive remarks, simply waving his hand to clear the sand once more.
"From where did you start your voyage?" he wrote first. "We are the Cduha people, and you are in our home of Cduharusa."

Orion could see Laros was displeased. Still, he had been nothing but truthful. He waited for Laros to finish before writing below his work. It was fortunate Orion thought as fast as he did; no hesitation meant he could give answers quickly and surely, less chance of being suspected of lying. Which he wasn't, but he really didn't need that negativity.
"Astraeus is both group and village. We are a conclave of individuals from all across the land, brought together for exploration of both the world and how it works. I am an instructor: I teach others math, working with numbers."
He did hesitate visibly for a moment, before writing below it.
"Astraeus is also a gathering place for many with unique abilities. I have witnessed and instructed a few individuals with abilities similar to your own, though I cannot help advance their unique abilities beyond general advice for meditation and experimentation. Is the stoneshifting unique to you, Laros, or are all your people as capable?"
Best to explain why, despite being so foreign, he wasn't surprised at Laros manipulating the earth. Equally, by saying the words he did, he vaguely implied he wasn't one of those individuals.

Laros huffed from his nostrils angrily, finding his question unanswered. He received more information as to what Astraeus itself was, but that was not what he sought. The man did not wave his hand this time, the sands simply moved about on their own. There was far more aggression in the way it was done in this instance.
"From where do you hail?" he asked again, ignoring the question brought to him. "Astraeus are not people of these lands or any other."

Orion shrugged before writing his answer.
"As I said, I hail from Astraeus. It is located in a land called Australia. I believe that will not help either of us, however, as I do not recognize any of the groups you told me before."

"You come to our home with an explosion from the sky. Your needs come secondary," Laros wrote first, knuckles whitening slightly.
"What is "Australia"? Is it in the sky, where you come from?"

Ah. Now he understood what he was asking.
"I apologize, I did not grasp your question properly. Australia is a land on the ground, surrounded by vast oceans. We built a ship of metal to allow us to leave and explore. The 'explosion' you speak of was something going wrong. I was with a number of others, but the last I remember was lying down to sleep in my cabin."
