Here on The Starbound Initiative, we use a numberless stat system to measure a character's capabilities when not enhanced by technology or gifts. This numberless system provides only a loose outline of what people can and can't do at each stat grade so as to not be restrictive, while also providing a clear indication of where and how people can be stronger or weaker than others. We use a letter-grade system that goes from D - SS, and the four stats we measure are Strength, Agility, Endurance, and Perception. Below, you'll find a description of each stat, as well as what each letter grade tier amounts to. Each letter grade costs a point, with the exceptions being S costing two points, and SS costing three. No new player may start with any stat in SS grade. All new players start with a total of 12 points.
STRENGTH (STR): A measure of how hard your character can strike and lift. This also affects things like jumping and throwing power, pushing and pulling power, how one is affected by certain negative enironments, etc. The lower your strength grade, the weaker your character will physically be overall, while high strength grades can permit incredible showings of power.
D Grade: Physically weak and frail, your character falls below the human average. This could be as small of a difference as not being able to lift up to your body weight, to as great of a difference as being too frail to lift much heavier than a small bottle of water. C Grade: The average human, and slightly more. You can reasonably lift up to your body weight, and then some, but not to the point that any would consider you impressive. B Grade: Finally, you're starting to be more than the average man. You can easily lift double what the average man can, and you hit significantly harder. You are capable of easily lifting objects weighing 200 pounds and maybe even more, as well as striking hard enough to shatter brick and bend metal. A Grade: Naturally powerful enough now that this might as well be your superpower, you can lift well over 500 lbs with relative ease, and you can easily bend many different metals with your bare hands. The concussive force you pack behind each of your blows is nothing to scoff at, even when your opponents are heavily armored or even mechanical. S Grade: With natural power to rival mythical beings, your strength is so great that few could dream to achieve it, and fewer still actually have. Getting hit by you feels like getting hit by a truck. Light automobiles can even be lifted with some effort, and there are few walls that can keep you out. SS Grade: The stuff of legends, your physical prowess is something unheard of in the world of man. Cars and trucks can be tossed by you like a normal man would toss a sack of rice. One blow from you is enough to fell even some of the most fierce men. There are none as great as you without the assistance of gifts or technology. AGILITY (AGI): A measure of your character's speed and acrobatics. From running fast and outmaneuvering your opponents, to pulling off backflips and freerunning techniques, and even insane acrobatics, Agility covers a broad spectrum. The lower your agility grade, the slower and more clumsy your character will be, while higher agility grades permit incredible running speeds and acrobatics.
D Grade: You are slow and clumsy, sluggish and dull. Your movements lack haste or gusto, and it seems they almost lack purpose. You may be either incredibly slow, or just barely slower than the average man or woman, but still, your speed leaves much to be desired, and you're unlikely to ever successfully pull off even the simplest of acrobatic maneuvers. C Grade: Far from remarkable but certainly not awful, you are fairly average. You can run a ten minute mile - maybe a six minute one if you try hard enough - and you can pull off basic acrobatic maneuvers a fair amount of the time. You might get lucky and pull off some flips, but nothing crazy can be reliably attempted with success. B Grade: Finally above the average, you can hit that six minute mile without having to stress your body out. Your body is far more nimble and light, and you're experienced enough that you can reliably perform somewhat difficult acrobatics with reasonable preparation, though doing so on the fly will still prove rather difficult. A Grade: The six minute mile has become considerably less, enough so that if you sprint you can clear a mile between one and two minutes. Your body is fluid and naturally acrobatic, and some of the most difficult maneuvers involving just your body can be performed reliably, even with little prep time. S Grade: Your speed is unimaginable, and you can outrun traffic at your top speed, even keeping up with vehicles on the freeway when sprinting. Almost no acrobatic maneuver is too difficult for you, and very rarely do you misstep or falter. SS Grade: Like Hermes, your speed has reached a point that no other can compare. Your top speed hits over 100 miles per hour, yor movements are graceful and your body is incredibly light on its feet. There is almost no time where your body doesn't do exactly what you want it to, unless you're not controlling your own movement. A speed demon, your body can naturally hit speeds no one else can without the assistance of gifts or technology.
ENDURANCE (END): Not a measure of how hard you hit, but how hard you can get hit, and keep moving. The endurance stat is a direct measurement of how tough your character's physical body is in every way, from defending against basic things like strikes and blades, to even resisting illnesses and the like.
D Grade: Your body can't handle much abuse, and it can hardly handle doing even basic functions. Falling far below the human average, you have little stamina, a weak immune system, bruise terribly easily, and have an incredibly low pain tolerance. There are few things that don't hurt you or make you uncomfortable at this grade. C Grade: An average person, you can handle extreme activity for a short time before needing a break, have a decent immune system, and a moderate pain tolerance. You are not remarkable in any way, but your body is also not unbearably frail. At the very least, you can survive. B Grade: Things like the common cold and basic allergies don't have as much of an effect on you as they do others, but the difference is negligible if not observed consciously. You have a higher pain tolerance than most, and have a surprising amount of stamina for everyday tasks. A Grade: By now, your body has developed a resistance to weaker illnesses - not an immunity, but things like the common cold pass far quicker, and lighter allergies hardly have an effect on you anymore. Your skin is tough, almost feeling like asphalt in that it's soft, yet durable. S Grade: Should you be stabbed, the knife would break against your skin. If someone were weak enough, striking you would be almost painful for them as well. You have stamina that appears to be unending, a pain tolerance that most could never dream of, and common illnesses now seem to pass within the day you receive them. SS Grade: Your skin is like stone, tougher than most could imagine. Pain that would cause hysteria in the common man is like almost nothing to you, and specialized weapons are needed to pierce your skin. You need almost no rest to work at near full capacity. Even without gifts or technology, you are a well-oiled machine.
PERCEPTION (PER): A measure of your character's senses, how much they can hear and see, how well they adjust to loud or quiet noises, fast movements, subtle touches or smells lingering in the air. Those with lower perception grades will have harder times reacting to fast opponents, handling louder or higher-pitched sounds, and more. A higher perception grade greatly enhances all senses, as well as providing some "resistance" to things like bright lights, harsher smells, etc. Your eyes can always keep up with someone whose speed is of an equal grade.
D Grade: Below average, your senses lack the ability to catch what most others would. Perhaps you need glasses, or hearing aids, or maybe you can't smell things unless they have a particularly pleasant aroma, or a strong odor. The severity may vary, but your senses will always be worse than the average man's. Powerful smells, piercing sounds, and bright lights will all be particularly wounding and damaging to you, possibly even more than physical pain. Sensory attacks can and will be debilitating. Fast opponents will also move at near blinding speeds, rendering you near incapable of fighting back adequately. C Grade: Maybe you will need slight assistance for a few shortcomings, but for the most part, your senses do not struggle. You will still have typical weaknesses to bright lights, piercing sounds, and odors, but it could be worse. Fewer things will be legitimately debilitating. B Grade: Your ears can pick up on sounds further away, and you recognize smells with ease. Harsher smells, sounds, and lights have less of an affect on you, but can still have considerable side-effects if they persist. A Grade: Your senses are very well honed. Within the natural perceivable realm of sounds, lights, and smells for humans, you can reasonable observe them all. Colors stand out more, and sounds are easily discernible even within crowds. Things that would debiliate a normal man are now just moderate inconveniences to you, things you can easily get by. With light, there are few things that escape your notice. S Grade: You are starting to perceive things outside the realm of what most humans can. New colors, high pitched sounds, smells that would normally be indiscernible, and you can recognize everything. Your attention to detail is near perfect, and if you take the time to observe anything, you can commit it to memory. SS Grade: At this point, your senses have reached mythical levels. Your eyes are near perfect, able to catch every single visible detail with substantial light, and still many even without it. You can hear sounds that are far beyond what people typically can, and even loud noises are not too painful. Odors are hardly harmful, though easily recognized. There is not one thing that escapes your notice no matter which of your sense you use to observe it.
