Name: Jacquetta Lux Demir
Aliases: Jack, Hypnos
Occupation: Cadet
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Height: 5'1
Weight: 85 lbs
Appearance
While her family is made up of tall individuals, Jack herself is on the short side due to malnutrition and a lack of sleep growing up. She's very frail and boney with some curves, but she's so thin that they're barely there. Jack has an olive skin tone with full lips, bright green eyes, lots of freckles, and short brown hair that fades to white on the ends. Her clothing choices tend to make her look like a bit of a hoodlum and usually cover any hint of her girlish figure. Jack also sports gauges, scars, and a number of tattoos on her knuckles on other parts of her body. A serious look is usually plastered to her face, people who don't know her better would say she looks like she's about to go kill somebody. There are typically dark circles under her eyes from lack of sleep and a poor diet.
Persona
(TW: mentions of an ED and drug addiction)
Jack is a very angry and cynical young woman. While she can be a bit cheeky and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself, she tries not to be blatantly rude or disrespectful unless she feels someone’s really deserved it. She tries to avoid allowing her anger affect people that have nothing to do with her problems, but she often fails in spite of her efforts. Jack struggles with wanting to feel free from authority figure's iron grasp and not wanting to feel like a cold hearted killer like her mother made her out to be. While she’s not physically strong, she’ll do anything she can for the people she cares about and the things she believes in and would throw herself into danger for their sake without a thought. While she was reluctant to give her life away for a brother and a family she barely knows, others observe that she can be quite selfless, giving and kind in spite of what her family says. Jack has internalized a lot of the negative things her family says about her and desperately wishes for support from friends to find her own identity outside of what they created for her.
Jack really doesn’t talk much around people she doesn’t know and spends a lot of time alone in self reflection. She has a near constant sense of paranoia and because of this, she can become a little clingy with people she becomes close to simply due to being desperate for a sense of security. Jack feels very alone in the world.
Sleep is something elusive to Jack. She’s usually pretty jacked up on caffeine even if she seems mellow and does everything she can to avoid sleeping. Nightmares, sleepwalking and hallucinations have plagued her for most of her life and her gifts have only made sleeping an even stranger experience. Her nightmares feel very real and vivid to her and can sometimes leave her silent for hours upon waking up. Avoiding sleeping eventually lead to difficulty sleeping even when she tries.
Jack is currently looking for some sense of meaning in life as well as a sense of self. Since birth her existence had only been for the sake of others, and she desperately wants to carve her own path. It's been a few years now since she escaped her home town, her family, and even a serial killer that was on her trail way back then, but she still can't seem to overcome her paranoia which makes befriending people nearly impossible without persistence.
As mentioned before, Jack is an angry young lady and usually uses anger as a mask. While she’s collected enough not to lash out, she uses anger to cover up when she doesn’t want people to know what she’s feeling. If she feels she might cry, she’ll turn it to anger to prevent the tears. If she doesn’t want someone to know they nearly made her laugh or she enjoys them she’ll act irritated. It can be pretty obnoxious to people and she’s not completely aware of the habit. People who don't know her better typically perceive her as coarse and cold hearted.
Events before her arrival at the institute caused her to become an extremely self destructive person. She doesn't take in the proper nutrition, lives off caffeine, drives and acts recklessly, struggles with drugs and generally doesn't show much concern for preserving her own life. She feels terror like any other person when thrust into danger, but often puts herself in harms way without batting an eye.
Jack suffers from sleep terrors, cataplexy, insomnia, sleepwalking and is recovering from an eating disorder as well as drug addiction.
Background
Her mother named her Jacquetta Lux Demir after Jacquetta of Luxembourg, an over looked figure in the War of the Roses. The woman probably thought it was quite pretty and romantic. Imagine her disdain when the child grew up to be a human wreck of a girl going by the name "Jack".
Jack was raised to be an organ donor for her older brother who was diagnosed with a rare kidney disorder. Her oldest brother wasn’t compatible and neither were her parents, and in their desperation they had another child who to their fortune was a match. Jack wasn’t allowed to play sports, dance, or do any activity that could be dangerous, she could only eat specific foods and wasn’t allowed to have medicine. Jack got into fights regularly at school which she hid pretty well, but she was pulled out of school after her mom found out one of the nurses gave her pain killer for a headache and was made to do online schooling. Jack developed an eating disorder due to a mixture of poor self image, a lack of control, and wanting to get back at her parents. The only thing they seemed to value her for was her body, so she wanted to destroy it.
When her mom refused to let her leave the house and get a job, Jack got worse and started running away, getting into fights, doing drugs, smoking and any other self destructive habit she could pick up. Her parents were too afraid to hurt her physically since they needed her, though her mother struck out in fits of anger occasionally, only sorry because she didn’t want to damage her son’s life line. Both parents verbally abused her and isolated her constantly and would often lash out at her friends. When her mother told her she’d never go to college and that she’d make sure she’d never get married, Jack reached a tipping point and decided to do something drastic and irreversable. The same day she met a boy named Blythe. He talked her down and she stayed at his house for a while getting to know his family and attempting to come to terms with herself and the chaos in her life. She’d left her phone at home and her brother needed an emergency transplant during the night. They were unable to locate Jack in time and her brother passed away. This marked probably one of the most emotionally conflicting times in her life.
She didn't know if she should've been happy to be free from what enslaved her up to that point in time, or if she should feel the guilt of a killer. Perhaps, in a way, she felt both. Her brother's death still haunts her to this day, and she never returned home upon hearing the news. Jack planned to skip town, but ended up staying with Blythe's family a little longer while she attempted to carve out a new path for herself. During this time news of serial killings in their town were getting more and more serious, and Blythe's mother refused to let Jack set out on her own until the killer was caught. Jack didn't have many friends but she met several people through Blythe that she began to see regularly including a young man named Ember. Her experiences with him are a different story, and are equally as unpleasant as most of what transpired in her life up until the present. Blythe and two other friends named Toby, Leland and Imogen were the only ones to know of her gifts and they eventually ran away as a group when they found out Jack was being hunted again. In spite of their best efforts, Jack was pulled away from them. She's currently adjusting to life at the institute and searching for a sense of motivation. Her morals are very askew and she's used her powers in ways she shouldn't on multiple occasions. Jack loses her footing a little more each day.
Skills and Weaknesses
Intuitive: Jack has good instinctive reasoning and is very perceptive. She knows how to observe people and situations and put pieces together.
Brave: "Brave" might not be the correct word for it, but Jack is so reckless with her own life that there aren't a lot of situations that will cause her to back down if she feels strongly about a matter.
Sharpshooter: While she may not be strong, Jack knows her way around firearms and with her accuracy and perception, she rarely misses her mark.
Weak: Jack's self destructive life style has left her physically capable of very little. She can't lift much or hit hard, and while she's very speedy and agile, she's definitely not a distance runner.
Self-destructive: Speaking of self destructiveness, that's a big weakness of hers.
Insomniac: Jack is constantly exhausted and basically runs on caffeine. Without her daily dose, she can barely function.
Gifts
Oneiric Physiology: It’s a bit ironic seeing as Jack’s an insomniac, but her Gifts revolve quite heavily around sleeping and dreaming. While sleep is allusive to jack, her gifts allow her to fall asleep at will. But since this is unnatural, she tends to sleep for an indefinite amount of time unless someone wakes her up and rises unrefreshed. Jack is able control people’s dreams or cause them to not dream at all, as well dream walk. If someone falls asleep in contact with her, she can bring their consciousness to walk in another's dreams with her. Astral projection also falls in with her abilities, allowing her to exit her body and leave herself in an unconscious state as she travels freely almost like a ghost. In her projected state, she currently can't make herself visible or audible to others. She's able to manipulate small objects to a small extent, but this sends her back to her body directly after the task is done and leaves her comatose for about an hour or so, depending on the situation.
Nemesis Form: Jack has the ability to take on the form of what or who a chosen target fears most. While in the form of their fear, she appears as a more exaggerated form of it like one might see in a nightmare. This is merely visual and doesn't grant her the physical capabilities or weight of the thing she mimics, but her AGI is boosted by one tier while in Nemesis Form.
