Appearance
Jasper is a young man with Italian and Brazilian roots. He’s tall with tanned skin and a very muscular build due to an active life style and a desire to keep himself at peak condition. His brown eyes always seem to radiate a sense of confidence and he tends to walk with straight posture and a sure step. While he’s quite assertive and has an alpha male-like demeanor about him, his goofy grin and a smattering of freckles across his cheeks tend to give him more of a childish look at times. Jasper prefers not to wear anything on his upper body unless he has to, and on the occasions that he chooses to, it’s usually an un-buttoned shirt or something that doesn’t fully cover up his chest and stomach. Jasper has an assortment of tattoos, his most notable being a large dragon tattoo that stretches over a good portion of his back and covers up some of his more serious scars.
Persona
Another thing Jasper values is freedom. He loves the ocean, and the wind in his air, the feeling of being free of commitment and responsibility. This could be part of why he hasn’t been able to settle down with a girl, but it also makes it very difficult for him to accept his new life in the institute. However, he knows it’s stupid to fight it and his mother and his old mentor would want him to take advantage of such an opportunity, so that’s what he plans to do. In spite of this, he often finds himself feeling like a caged bird.
Like most people, Jasper has a few different sides to him. At first glance, it’s clear he has a lot of growing up to do. He enjoys drinking, is a notorious flirt with the ladies, pretty much worships metal bands and classic rock, and he does pretty much whatever he wants. While he’s smart enough to accept when someone’s in authority over him, it’s entirely against his nature to grovel, and his domineering nature can make him come across as abrasive to those in authority, even if he doesn’t mean to.
Some might even describe the young man as war-like. He’s aggressive and constantly strives to improve himself, often starting rivalries with others as he feels it helps motivate him to improve even more if he feels like there’s someone he needs to rise above. While he does have his lazy days, he’s always up for physical activity and hates when a day goes by where he feels he hasn’t made any progress towards becoming the strongest man he can be. Jasper values his health and usually tries to go for healthy foods and stick to a good exercise regimen, but his love of alcohol kind of contradicts this value. While he’s cut out a lot of other things that are bad for him, he can’t seem to give up drinking and loves taking risks.
Another thing he struggles with is being extremely flirtatious, he’s had numerous flings and will chat up a girl that strikes his fancy any chance he gets. Rejection isn’t a big deal to him as he’s usually quite successful to him, so he takes it in stride. Fortunately, while Jasper has a lot of growing up to do, he’s able to identify his short comings and work on them. He’s aware that he tends to be annoyingly macho and usually only wants sexual relationships with women instead of ever trying to settle down and actually find a girlfriend. While he’s still young, he doesn’t just try to improve himself physically, but wants to become a better person day by day as well.
Beneath his confidence and zeal for life, Jasper struggles with guilt from past choices. He tries to shut the feelings out of his mind as it wears on his self-worth and confidence, but they tend to pop up when he least expects it. Because of this, he finds himself doing things in the present day to make up for the past, even though it’s so far down the line it really shouldn’t matter anymore. At his core, past his ego and his short temper, Jasper is very kind and values others. When it comes to his friends, he wants to put their needs above his own whenever possible and would hardly think twice before putting himself in harms way for their sake.

Background
Jasper grew up in a small country town in Brazil that was deeply rooted in superstition. He lived a pretty simple life, the town was small enough to where everyone knew everyone in the town, and he went to a little school held in an abandoned chapel. He spent most of his days leading a ragtag group of kids on play missions, his leadership position being due to the fact that he could spit the farthest out of the boys. Originally his name was Henrique before he left his home, and he lived with his mother as an only child. He never met his father, but was told he was a kindhearted man who loved Jasper more than anything else in the world. His mother always told him the same story with a strong smile and a happy gleam in her eyes, but he found her crying a lot when she thought he wasn’t there.
It was a superstition that originated in this particular town, and it had been going on for quite some time, but dragons were considered a bad omen representing death and evil. In turn, village inhabitants had a habit of killing any lizard like creatures they came across and were very careful with fire, fearing that if it escaped their lamps and fire pits it would summon years of misfortune. Conversely, the town resided by a large lake and viewed water as a symbol of hope and prosperity.
He never thought much of it, kind of like how people still knock on wood as per the old superstition, but one night he heard some of the older folks in the village discuss the superstition rather heatedly. He then wandered back to his home and sat alone in his room, staring at his blazing palm. What would happen if they found out? What was wrong with him? He ended up confiding with a former sailor he’d known for many years, the man practically being his father. Efrain was a mercenary, but had chosen to lay low and regain his strength in the rural town, where he befriended the boy and told him stories of his excursions.
Several months passed and Jasper had forgotten his worries, he never had any use for his Gift so he preferred to forget that it even existed at all. During the night of a festival, a group of marauders poured into the town. What should’ve been a cheerful night for the town's inhabitants became a struggle for their lives. The town was far off from the nearest city and law enforcement, and not many inhabitants had fire arms of their own. In his panic and anger, Jasper let lose and warded off the raiders with his gifts. After saving the lives of many he expected for the people to be relieved, perhaps grateful, but they turned on him in fear of his abilities. Jasper fled to the chapel where the others had him backed against the wall, snarling with scales across his body and smoke pouring out of his nostrils. His mother ran screaming up the steps for them to stop, but was met with a blow to the face at the top and sent tumbling back down.
The mob only parted when they heard the sound of gun fire and Efrain scooped up the boy and escaped through the window. It was strange to Jasper how everything could change so quickly. Just like that, they were on a boat, and Efrain was back to his old ways with his mercenary crew, the people he’d grown up with turned on him, and the last he saw his mother was injured. The boy sat on the boat as stars appeared over head, staring ahead in an attempt to ignore the scales that still hadn’t faded from his body. He wanted to go back to his mother, but he couldn’t put her in danger. She was probably ashamed of him, anyway. Still, he couldn't help but feel as though he'd abandoned her.
From there, he changed his name from Henrique to Jasper and was raised as a seafaring mercenary. Every day was a new adventure and he saw places all over the world. While it might not have been the most noble job, the journey turned him into a seasoned fighter and he learned a lot his mentor in the years they spent working side by side. Catastrophe struck yet again however, this time in his late teens. Enemies of his Efrain all but vanquished his group, and from there he set off to avenge his mentor. He actually came quite close having located his enemy somewhere in Egypt, but that also happened to be the day he was found and relocated to Melbourne to join the Astraeus Institute. He’s given up his plans for revenge, identifying it as reckless and immature, something Efrain wouldn’t have encouraged, but his anger is definitely still in tact. Currently, aside from one day escaping the institute, his goal is to become the strongest version of himself he can be. Something he works toward everyday.
