★ Mary Adelaide ★
Played by: foureyes
Faceclaim: Tower of God, Hwa Ryun
Age:
18
Gender:
Female
Weight and Height:
120 lbs, 5'11''
Appearance:
Fairly tall, noticeably underweight. Has a somewhat slouched posture and an awkward way of moving, as if she's a stranger in her own body. Her voice is soft, gentle, and can sing beautifully. Prefers dark, comfortable clothes, and jeans or shorts rather than any kind of dress. Will often wear gloves. Beneath her eyepatch is an empty socket with an ugly scar running straight across it.
Occupation:
Cadet
Personality:
Mary is quiet and introspective, the kind of girl who spends more time within the confines of her own mind than out in the real world. Though outwardly friendly, one gets a sense that she's always a little disconnected from other people, as if viewing them through a pane of glass. She is a perfectionist, pushing herself in all endeavors to not only succeed, but to perform flawlessly. Other notable traits are her curiosity, duplicity, and precision in both thought and action.
Background:
They say she came from a rich family, though the name Adelaide is not one known by many, and is spoken of in hushed voices by those who do. Mary herself is rather reticent on the subject. When asked what happened to her eye, she claims it was an accident. When asked about her parents, she cringes and avoids the question. She says she traveled all around the world in her youth, and has dozens of pictures to prove it- but not one of them shows anyone but Adelaide. Her documents are all in order, and there are no overt indications of criminal activity or anything particularly unusual in her life. On paper, she passes the background checks with ease. However, before coming to the Institute, she was not on record as being a Gifted, and it's difficult to find anyone who knew her well in the past- or at least, anyone willing to talk about it. Attempts to contact her family are bluntly refused, and her parents will quickly lawyer up if pressed. She came to the Astraeus Institute of her own free will, and is living there now.
Skills:
- Rich: Mary comes from a wealthy family, and money is never in short supply for her. She's been educated at the very best private schools, has more expensive clothing and personal effects than she knows what to do with, and even owns a nice house out there somewhere. If something has a price tag, chances are she can pay it.
- Education: As mentioned above, Mary has been taught and tutored by the very best. She speaks several languages, is extremely well-read, has knowledge in science and mathematics on par with most college graduates, can play chess at an almost professional level, and has a wonderful singing voice.
- Self-control: Mary has an excellent poker face. It's extremely hard to provoke her, or make her show any more emotion than she wants to. Her lies are almost undetectable, her self-discipline is iron.
Weaknesses:
- One-eyed: Mary is missing her right eye. Her whole right side is one big blind spot, and what's under the eyepatch is far from pretty.
- Curious: Though one might argue this is a positive trait, a number of dead cats say otherwise. Mary is driven to gather information and learn the truth, even if the secrets she seeks are private or dangerous.
- Unfeeling: It's unknown whether it's due to her gift, her genetics, or some subtle disease or disorder, but Mary has a very weak sense of touch. Tasks that require fine manual dexterity are difficult for her, and she can have a hard time keeping her balance or noticing when she brushes up against something.
Gifts:
Neural Burn (Secondary, Level 1): Mary's touch causes agonizing pain. Skin-to-skin contact with her is like touching red-hot metal, and even standing within a few feet of her is uncomfortable, with symptoms including nasty aches and paresthesia. This ability inflicts no actual harm- rather, it 'tricks' the nervous system and directly induces vivid sensation. Because of this, it bypasses normal pain tolerance to some extent, treating Endurance as if it were one rank lower. However, the pain/discomfort disappears as soon as one gets away from her. Mary cannot turn this ability off.
Mimic (Primary, Level 1): By making physical contact with a Gifted individual, and having his/her explicit consent, Mary can temporarily copy Gifted abilities. She can only hold one copied ability at a time, and said ability will only work at Level 1, regardless of its original level. She can use a copied ability for up to 10 minutes, and can reset this duration with renewed contact/consent; once the duration expires she loses the ability. Mary's Gift cannot copy techniques or fine control of a Gift that the copied individual obtained through experience or training, and weapons/technology-based 'Gifts' cannot be copied at all.
